Review of Deadworld by J.N. Duncan

I found this  book at Dollar Tree and thought it looked and sounded interesting. Unfortunately, it ended up being just ok. None of the characters are particularly likeable and the main character, Agent Jackie Rutledge, is in need of some serious therapy. There are also some grammatical errors such as “The body lay upon the steel, clothed only from the waste up…” (pg. 219). Jackie, and some other characters, swear a lot. If that bothers you, this book probably isn’t for you.
I had a really hard time getting into the book at first because Jackie’s character is so off-putting. When she is first introduced, she is upset at having to be up early to investigate a child’s murder because she’s hung over after going home with a random guy the night before. Nice. Her alcoholism is a reoccurring problem. She’s also completely oblivious to most things around her, especially when it comes to her partner of eight  years, Laurel, who happens to be psychic.
By the middle of the book it got a little more interesting for me and I kind of like the character Shelby. She’s Nick, the private investigator’s, assistant. She has  fiery personality and speaks her mind. The action scenes and the climax of the book fell flat for me. I felt no excitement at all while I was reading them. I won’t be reading the next book in this series and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

I gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

I love reading, listening to music, watching wrestling and spending time with my friends and family. I read mostly Young Adult books and I love paranormal books, especially vampire ones. I am originally from Connecticut, but I live in Maryland now. I have a book buying habit and I'm addicted to the book section of my local thrift shop.
